Wedding comedy woos cinemagoers

Katherine Heigl rom-com 27 Dresses has won the hearts of UK movie lovers, taking the top spot at the box office on its opening weekend, according to official figures from the number-crunchers at Nielsen.

The film features the Knocked Up and Roswell star as a serial bridesmaid who faces a dilemma when her spoilt sibling decides to marry the object of her affections after a whirlwind romance. It took £1.75 million since opening on Friday.

In second place on the chart was dance drama Step Up 2 The Streets, while kid's fantasy flick The Spiderwick Chronicles, which features Charlie And The Chocolate Factory star Freddie Highmore, came third.

Jim Carrey's animated hit Horton Hears A Who! fell to number four this week, while Owen Wilson's latest, slapstick comedy Drillbit Taylor, debuted at number five.

Historical epic spoof Meet The Spartans dropped to six, ahead of genuine pre-historic epic 10,000 BC.

This week's number eight went to conspiracy thriller Vantage Point, while Disney's family comedy The Game Plan was at nine.

Creepfest The Orphanage, from the makers of Pan's Labyrinth, completed a second week on the chart at number ten.
