21 wins big at UK box office

Casino drama 21 has topped the UK box office chart on its opening weekend, newly released figures from Nielsen show.

The inspired-by-true-events story, which stars American Beauty's Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth of Superman Returns, took over at the summit from Katherine Heigl rom-com 27 Dresses, which fell two places to number three behind Brit-flick comedy Son Of Rambow.

Fantasy adventure The Spiderwick Chronicles became the top-grossing film in the top ten at number four. The movie, which stars Mary-Louise Parker of Weeds and David Strathairn of Good Night, And Good Luck, has now brought in over £8.85 million at the box office.

Just behind it at five was dance sequel Step Up 2: The Streets, while George Clooney comedy Leatherheads - which also stars Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski of the US version of The Office - made a modest debut at six.

Whimsical animation Horton Hears A Who! continued to win over fans at seven, followed by US martial arts drama Never Back Down at eight.

Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones rockumentary Shine A Light entered the chart at nine, with another debutant, Pathology with Rocky Balboa's Milo Ventimiglia and Alyssa Milano of Charmed, coming in at ten.
