Golden Compass finds way to DVD chart summit

All-star fantasy flick The Golden Compass has navigated its way to the top of the official UK DVD chart, according to new figures.

Stats from the Official UK Chart Company shows the film, which stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sir Ian McKellen and Dakota Blue Richards, overcame Will Smith's last-man-standing thriller I Am Legend to claim the top spot.

They were ahead of animated family furballs Alvin & The Chipmunks at three, with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore rom-com Music And Lyrics in at number four.

Riotous remake St Trinians claimed fifth spot on the chart, followed by epic adventure 300 at six.

Rob Zombie-directed slasher remake Halloween, which stars Malcolm McDowell, Deadwood's Brad Dourif and Troy's Tyler Mane, stalked into the chart at number seven, while light-hearted Disney spoof Enchanted dropped four places to eight.

The first series of Bafta-award winning BBC comedy Gavin And Stacey is at nine this week, with teen comedy Superbad rounding out the top ten.
