Hopkins confirmed for King Lear

4 stars out of 5.0
Anthony Hopkins will play King Lear in a new adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy, it has been confirmed.

The Oscar-winning actor is said to be "thrilled" at the prospect of reprising the role, having already tread the boards as Lear in David Hare's production at the National Theatre 21 years ago

Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and Keira Knightley will play Lear's three daughters, with director Joshua Michael Stern saying more high-profile names are yet to be added.

"The one thing that I'm staying away from is stunt casting," said Stern, "so there won't be the American comedian, but there will be some really great actors playing smaller roles that will make a lot of sense."

He added that he wants to stay as close to the original text as possible, saying that he is "not very fond of the modern adaptations".

The film is due to start shooting in Britain or Ireland in the early part of next year.

Hopkins recently visited the YMCA in Port Talbot, where he made his first forays into acting.
