Shane Meadows wins at Edinburgh
Shane Meadows has been given a major award at this year's Edinburgh International Festival.The Dead Man's Shoes director scooped the Michael Powell Award for best new British feature for his new film Somers Town, which focuses on the adventures of a Polish teenager in London. The jury voted for Meadows unanimously, saying: "It is a great pleasure to recognise Somers Town as the freshest, most imaginative, maverick work deserving of the Michael Powell Award." Scots actor Robert Carlyle was awarded best performance in a British feature for his part in the new drama Summer, a role which the jury described as "flawless". The awards were handed out by fellow Scot Sir Sean Connery, who is the patron of the prestigious event. Elsewhere, Scots director Marianna Palka took the new director's award for her quirky romance Good Dick, while Werner Herzog's Encounters At The End Of The World was named best documentary.
