WALL-E trashes competition in US

3 stars out of 5.0
New animated adventure WALL-E about a waste-compacting robot has reached the top of the US box office after its first week of release.

The latest feature from Academy Award-winning studio Pixar took $62.5 million (£31.3 million) in its opening weekend.

It has given Pixar its ninth number one movie and has matched the takings of one of the studio's biggest hits Monsters Inc.

The new action thriller Wanted starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy entered the chart at second place, with takings of $51.1 million.

WALL-E takes the top spot after knocking Steve Carrell's comedy Get Smart into third position.

The top five is completed by Jack Black's animated comedy Kung Fu Panda and Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk.

Mike Myers' new comedy The Love Guru is standing at sixth place, while Indiana Jones remains in the top ten at seventh place.

The escapades of the archaeologist have now taken nearly $300 million in the US alone.
