Tim Burton casts Alice role

Tim Burton has chosen the actress he wants to play the lead role for his forthcoming Alice In Wonderland movie for Disney.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the relatively unknown Australian Mia Wasikowska is in final negotiations to play Alice after a long search for the title character.

The 18-year-old actress is currently appearing in US TV series In Treatment, having made her name on Australian TV drama All Saints.

In keeping with Burton's offbeat style, the new take on Lewis Carroll's classic novel will combine live action with animation, as well as being made in 3D.

Commenting on his attraction the story, Burton has said in the past: "It's such a classic and the imagery is so surreal.

"The stories are like drugs for children. It's like, 'Whoa, man'. So I think it's an interesting challenge."

Burton's recently had a hit with the musical Sweeney Todd, as well as being known for as quirky animated adventures such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
