Aronofsky on board for Robocop remake

4 stars out of 5.0
Darren Aronofsky has been confirmed as the director of MGM's forthcoming Robocop remake.

Paul Verhoeven directed the original in 1987, which starred Peter Weller as a police officer who is rebuilt as a cyborg after being mortally wounded.

Aronofsky, know for work such as Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain, has long been tipped to helm a 21st century version of the cult film.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new project will be penned by Road To Perdition writer David Self and may take a more "noir direction".

Plot details about the movie have not yet been revealed, but it is believed that the film will be a "new instalment" to the Robocop franchise rather than a straight remake.

Brooklyn-born Aronofsky is currently completing production work on The Wrestler – a drama starring Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.

MGM is also said to be considering remakes of Red Dawn, Fame, Poltergeist and Death Wish.
