Morgan Freeman in 'serious' car crash

4 stars out of 5.0
Morgan Freeman has been admitted to hospital after breaking his arm in a serious road accident.

It has been suggested that the 71-year-old actor, currently starring in The Dark Knight, may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The Shawshank Redemption star was driving a Nissan Maxima belonging to his passenger Demaris Meyer when it veered off the road and flipped over several times.

Both Freeman and Meyer were cut from the wreckage and airlifted to hospital, but the actor's spokesman said he is expected to make a "good" recovery.

"There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved," said Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Ben Williams.

Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said: "They had to use the jaws of life (hydraulic cutters) to extract him from the vehicle."

"He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."

There is currently no news on the condition of Demaris Meyer.
