Tropic Thunder topples The Dark Knight

Tropic Thunder has knocked The Dark Knight from the top of the US box office.

Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr and Jack Black star in the comedy about the making of a Vietnam film, which has raked in some $26 million (£13.9 million) since being released on Wednesday

Christopher Nolan's second Batman movie The Dark Knight slipped to second place after a four-week reign at the top of the chart.

However, the movie is still breaking records – with Media By Numbers reporting that it has become the second-highest grossing US film ever, beaten only by James Cameron's 1997 smash Titanic.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars opened in third place with takings of $11.1 million, while Keifer Sutherland's new movie Mirrors was fourth with $11.1 million.

The top five was completed by new comedy Pineapple Express, which raked in some $10 million.
