"50 First Dates" holds US top spot

Romantic comedy "50 First Dates" starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler has held on to the top spot in the US box office this week.

The film more than doubled the takings of any of the week's new releases despite its revenues dropping 47 per cent.

"Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" with Lindsay Lohan acting up as a New Yorker stuck in the suburbs entered the chart at second place.

Political farce "Welcome to Mooseport", starring Ray Romano and Gene Hackman, came in at fourth, beaten by "Miracle" - a docudrama in its third week at number three.

Buffy alumni Michelle Trachtemberg's raunchy teen adventure "Eurotrip", entered the chart in fifth.

The weakness of the new entrants meant that total box office takings in the States for the top 12 films were down 29 per cent from last week and 21 per cent from this time last year.

1 50 First Dates $21 million (£11.3 million)
2 Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen $9.2 million
3 Miracle $8 million
4 Welcome to Mooseport $7 million
5 Eurotrip $6.6 million
6 Barbershop 2: Back In Business $6.3 million
7 Mystic River $3.1 million
8 Against The Ropes $3 million
9 The Butterfly Effect $2.9 million
10 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $2.8 million
