Bafta mania hits London

The prestigious Bafta Awards take place Sunday in London and have attracted some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Stephen Fry will host the 55th awards ceremony which will be broadcast on BBC One at 21:00 GMT on Sunday. A-listers Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Scarlett Johansson and Renee Zellweger are all expected to attend.

US civil war epic Cold Mountain leads the field with 13 nominations, followed by The Return of the King which has 12. Girl with a Pearl Earring has 10 nominations in all; while Master and Commander and Lost in Translation have eight each.

Directors due to attend include Cold Mountain's Anthony Minghella and Rings maestro Peter Jackson, as well as Tim Burton, Sofia Coppola and Richard Curtis.

Among those on presenting duty are actors Helena Bonham Carter, Jon Voigt, Mackenzie Crook, Alicia Silverstone, Val Kilmer, Thandie Newton, Joely Richardson and Lord Attenborough.

Challenging Cold Mountain and the third Lord of the Rings movie for best film are Peter Weir's epic seafaring tale Master and Commander, Sofia Coppola's low-key comedy Lost in Translation featuring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson; and the Tim Burton fantasy Big Fish.

Newcomer Scarlett Johansson, 19, is shortlisted twice in the best actress category for Girl with a Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation. She faces stiff competition from Anne Reid for The Mother, Naomi Watts for 21 Grams and Uma Thurman for Kill Bill.

Other British hopefuls at this year's event include Sir Ian McKellen and Paul Bettany with best supporting actor nominations, and Emma Thompson in the best supporting actress category.
