Career honour for James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones is to be honoured with the Screen Actors Guild's (SAG) lifetime achievement award, it has been reported.

The veteran actor – whose booming voice characterised Darth Vadar in the Star Wars movies – has been nominated for one Oscar and seven Emmy awards during his movie career.

Jones' voice can be heard in roles such as Mufasa, the king in Disney's The Lion King, as well as numerous commercials

Ironically, the 77-year-old actor barely spoke as a child because of a severe stutter that he overcame only in high school.

SAG president Alan Rosenberg said the 77-year-old actor's career "commands our admiration and respect".

"It is our honour to bestow the guild's highest tribute on this extraordinary actor," Rosenberg said.

Jones' role in the 1970 film adaptation of The Great White Hope earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award.

The actor's long-running career also includes a role in Stanley Kubrick's classic wartime satire Dr Strangelove in 1964.
