Marvel has recast the role of Jim Rhodes in the forthcoming Iron Man sequel, according to reports.

In the original film – which starred Robert Downey Jr as the eponymous hero – Terrence Howard played Jim Rhodes, a character who transformed into War Machine.

However, the Hollywood Reporter has claimed that Oceans Eleven star Don Cheadle will now take the role after talks with Howard fell through due to financial differences.

Jon Favreau has confirmed he will return to the director's chair for the follow-up, while Downey Jr has also signed up to play Tony Stark for a second time.

Gwyneth Paltrow is also set to return as love interest Pepper Potts in the forthcoming movie, which is reportedly being scripted by Justin Theroux.

The writers of the first film, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, are currently in negotiations with Marvel Studios about taking on other superhero projects.

Iron Man 2 is scheduled for cinema release on May 7, 2010.
