Tolkien's great-grandson calls for Jackson Hobbit

JRR Tolkien's great-grandson has expressed his desire to see Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson make a film version of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit.

Royd Tolkien declared, “I would love to see Peter Jackson make a film of The Hobbit. That would be the perfect ending.”

Jackson himself has expressed his wish to make The Hobbit, but he has admitted that disputes over the rights may stall the project.

The Hobbit tells the story of how Bilbo Baggins, Frodo's uncle, finds fame and fortune - and how he comes upon the Ring that lies at the heart of The Lord Of The Rings.

The significance of the Ring, and its terrible powers, are barely hinted at in The Hobbit, which was written some 20 years before Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings.

The final part of the movie Rings trilogy - The Return Of The King - was this weekend named as the best film of 2003 at the US Critics' Choice Awards.
