Master and Commander heads pack for film awardsThe film, which stars Oscar winner Russell Crowe, is up for awards including best actor for the Gladiator star, best film and best director for Peter Weir. Other pictures expected to receive acclaim include The Hours, Young Adam, The Magdalene Sisters and The Mother, which are all contenders for best British film, known as the Attenborough Award. Julie Walters and Dame Helen Mirren are hotly tipped for their roles in Brit-flick Calendar Girls, while Jude Law is also up for an award for Cold Mountain. Organisers of the Film Critics' Circle say the gongs were set up to promote the art of criticism and quality in major film production.
