Role Models tops UK box office

Role Models has claimed the number one on the UK box office chart after its first weekend on release.

The comedy, starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott, pulled in £2.3 million in three days to keep Golden Globe winner Slumdog Millionaire from the top spot.

Rudd and Scott star as energy drink salesmen who must attend a community service programme with lonely youngsters following an arrest for a caffeine-fuelled bender.

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, which was a multiple winner at Sunday's Golden Globe awards, took second place with takings of £1.8 million in its opening weekend.

Romantic comedy Bride Wars, starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, opened in third while Daniel Craig's wartime drama Defiance debuted in fourth place.

Last week's number one, Yes Man – in which Jim Carrey plays play a frustrated bank worker who decides to change his life by saying "yes" to everything – completed the top five.
