Coogan and Stiller persuaded to team up

Comedian Steve Coogan is set to appear in a big budget Hollywood remake of the cult 1970s TV show The Persuaders.

Coogan will play the role of Lord Brett Sinclair, originally adopted by James Bond legend Sir Roger Moore.

Ben Stiller, star of Meet The Fockers, Dodgeball, Zoolander, is expected to play Danny Wilde.

Coogan, famous for his incarnations of Alan Partridge, Paul and Pauline Calf and Tony Ferrino, is no stranger to the world of films.

He starred in Around The World In 80 Days with Jackie Chan and Jim Broadbent, as well as appearing in Jim Jarmusch's Coffee And Cigarettes, and playing the lead role in comedy The Parole Officer.

Of his forthcoming role, Coogan said: "I liked the fact that after Moore had punched someone, he'd take a comb out, sort his haircut and wander off."

By turning The Persuaders into a film, the fashion for Hollywood remakes of 1970s TV shows is prolonged, after the examples set by Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, and the forthcoming Dukes of Hazzard movie.
