Lucas honoured by AFI
Lucas was presented with what is widely regarded as the highest accolade in the cinema industry by Steven Spielberg, in a two-hour event held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
The evening began with a song from Star Trek actor William Shatner, before the likes of Tom Hanks, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Duval, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford all paid homage to the director.
Spielberg, who will work with Lucas on Indiana Jones 4, said of Lucas: "You have done more for the collective unconscious of this planet than you will ever know."
There were also words of praise from fellow directors Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, Francis Ford Coppola and James Cameron.
Lucas had originally been offered the award a decade ago, but turned it down at the time, saying that he was too young.
Lucas becomes the 33rd person to receive the AFI award, following in the illustrious footsteps of legends such as Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Elizabeth Taylor, Sidney Poitier, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles.
