State of Play tops British box office
Crowe stars as an investigative journalist who works alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman's mistress.
It is directed by Scott Kevin Macdonald, who won an Oscar for his 1999 documentary about the Israeli hostage crisis at the 1972 Munich Olympics, One Day in September.
The film, which also stars Ben Affleck and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, took a modest £1.5 million in its first week on general release, compared to the £4.34 million Monsters Vs Aliens took over its opening weekend.
Fast and Furious was at number three in the chart, with teen comedy 17 Again and I Love You Man at fourth and fifth, respectively.
British political satire In The Loop, based on BBC4's The Thick of It, was the only film to climb the chart, edging up from eight to six.
