A Twist in the tale
However, not many directors can inspire such anticipation as the celebrated Roman Polanski, creator of such masterpieces as China Town, Rosemary's Baby and The Pianist.
In this new version of the Charles Dickens classic Harry Eden plays the Artful Dodger, while Ben Kingsley is the evil Fagin and Barney Clare the eponymous lead.
For those who have somehow missed the story of Oliver Twist the aforementioned orphan (Barney Clark) is thrown out of his boarding house for asking for more gruel. After finding and losing employment the hapless Twist walks seven days to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and his thieving gang master Fagin.
A kindly benefactor takes pity on the falsely arrested Twist whose luck then changes for the worse as Fagin and the evil Bill Sykes (Jamie Foreman) track Oliver down and plan his murder.
However, Oliver eventually escapes, though not before his girlfriend succumbs to the evil in Dickens' wonderfully dark and atmospheric world.
