It has been announced that the Lost In Translation star will play a woman bent on revenge after an invading army destroys her homeland, in a kind of female Gladiator.
The idea for the film is said to have come from Johansson herself when she was filming The Island with Ewan McGregor.
She raised the idea with the film's writers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, who both helped to pen The Legend of Zorro and episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and the pair drafted in Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to write the script.
Blackman said: "This will be a movie that falls between The Wild Bunch and Seven Samurai."
Johansson, meanwhile, is soon to appear in Woody Allen's new tennis comedy Match Point and Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia alongside Josh Hartnett and Hilary Swank.
