De Niro to go back to the mafia

Robert De Niro is to return to the genre of films that have made him most famous when he stars as a mafia hit man.

Previously the star of Raging Bull, Cape Fear and The King Of Comedy said he wouldn't go back to playing Mafiosi but the latest role has got him hooked.

Producer Jane Rosenthal, who also made Analyze That, Meet The Parents and Marvin's Room (all of which starred De Niro), told Daily Variety: "He did say that he wouldn't play a mafia character.

"But along came Don Winslow, who created a perfect character. The lesson here is, never say never."

De Niro is to star in a movie version of the book The Winter Of Frankie Machine by Winslow as a hit man who turns his back on violence to run a bait shop. However, things get complicated when he finds out he has been targeted for a hit.

His great mafia roles featured in the films The Godfather Part II, Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In America, Goodfellas and Casino among others.
