US gets sweeter Pride And Prejudice
Matthew MacFayden, who took on the role of Mr Darcy, revealed the change to USA Today explaining that test screening in the UK showed audiences hated the sugary ending.
In the US version Elizabeth, played by Keira Knightley, ends the film with a moonlight embrace with Darcy asking her whether he should call her Mrs Darcy.
UK audiences saw the Jane Austen adaptation conclude with Donald Sutherland, as Elizabeth's father, giving his consent to the marriage and saying: "If any young men come for Mary or Kitty, send them in, for I am quite at my leisure."
No doubt when the DVD hits the shelves the two endings of the film made by Working Title, which has also made Love Actually, About A Boy, Bridget Jones's Diary and My Beautiful Laundrette, will be available.
Meanwhile, Knightley is working on two sequels to Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl alongside Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp, as the director Gore Verbinski is shooting the two films simultaneously.
