New Vince Vaughn film No1 in US
The comedy, set on an island therapy resort, tells the story of four couples who are involuntarily subjected to marriage counselling.
Couples Retreat reunites Vince Vaughn and his Swingers co-star Jon Favreau. Kristen Bell who was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and 27 Dresses' Malin Akerman also co-star.
Currently being shown on 3,000 screens, the film was written by Vaughn and Favreau.
Last weekend's top movie, Woody Harrelson's horror comedy Zombieland, fell to second place in the box office chart with $15 million, raising its total to $47.8 million.
Meanwhile Paranormal Activity, the surprise success story, finished at number five, despite only being shown on 160 screens. The movie had a per-screen average of $44,163, compared to Couples Retreat's $11,780 per screen.
The other films in the US box office top ten were Cloudy with a Chance, Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Surrogates, The Invention of Lying, Whip It, Capitalism: A Love Story and Fame.
