Where the Wild Things Are tops US box office
Based on Maurice Sendak's book by the same name, which consists of only ten sentences, the film mixes live action and animation.
The plot sees a young boy, the story's main protagonist, journey to a land populated by monsters who are torn between eating and hugging him.
Directed by Spike Jonze, the adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are features the voices of Forest Whitaker and James Gandolfini.
The movie made $32.5 million (£19.9 million) on its opening weekend.
Law Abiding Citizen, Jamie Foxx's thriller, came second with $21.3 million.
Ghost movie Paranormal Activity reached number three, after word-of-mouth drew viewers to the documentary-style film.
Vince Vaughn's Couples Retreat, last week's number one, and horror film The Stepfather were also in the top five.
