Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy 'to star' in Mad Max film
The film, which will be called Mad Max: Fury Road, will revive the franchise, which has been dormant for 25 years.
Industry newspaper Variety said that Hardy, best known for his role in Black Hawk Down, will play the lead character 'Mad' Max Rockatansky.
A 21-year-old Mel Gibson launched his career by playing Mad Max in the first three instalments of the franchise.
Theron, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in Monster, will next be seen in The Road opposite Viggo Mortensen.
George Miller (Babe and Happy Feet) will continue to produce and direct the movie, while Brendan McCarthy has contributed to the script.
The first Mad Max was released in 1979 and portrayed a broken-down future society. It was followed by The Road Warrior (1981) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985).
