Zoe Saldana: I love playing action roles
The 31-year-old said she had no desire to play a damsel in distress, adding that she has grown up around strong women and feels cinema should reflect this.
Speaking to Teen Hollywood, she said: "You want to play great characters but right now I feel that Hollywood has made a living out of portraying women to be, God, such canker sores.
"We just have to be rescued all the time because we're so incompetent when, in reality, sometimes art needs to reflect what's going on in real life and in today's society, especially an American society, women are doing so much."
The actress added that while she loves being the character "holding the gun" in films, she would also like to explore other kinds of roles.
Saldana is currently starring in The Losers, which tells the story of a group of CIA black ops team members who, after being betrayed and left for dead, decide to go after the people who targeted them.
