Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman 'possible for Dragon Tattoo'
Carey Mulligan was initially linked to role of Lisbeth Salander, a bisexual hacker who teams up with a disgraced journalist to solve a decades old disappearance case.
But, according to Deadline, stars such as Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Keira Knightley, Olivia Thirlby and Scarlett Johansson, as well as Hathaway, Portman and Stewart have all expressed an interest in taking on the role.
A source said: "[Director David Fincher's] process is very specific and private. He's looking for authenticity and a degree of fierceness and believability capable of delivering the intensity that the part on the page calls for."
Fincher, who has previously directed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Panic Room, Se7en and Zodiac, will work with Steven Zaillian on the script.
The film is due to be released in 2012.
