Hepburn's classic dress for sale

Audrey Hepburn's classic black dress that she wore in the 1961 cult film Breakfast at Tiffany's is to be auctioned at Christie's this December.

Its current owner, Dominique Lapierre, is selling the dress to raise funds for City of Joy Aid, which helps India's poor.

The image of Hepburn in her role as Holly Golightly wearing the dress as she strolled down Fifth Avenue to Tiffany's is one of the most famous in cinematic history, and it is thought that the Givenchy-designed dress could fetch up to £70,000.

Other dresses worn by some of the most famous actresses have notched up hundreds of thousands of pounds in various auction houses and internet sites.

Keira Knightley auctioned the Vera Wang dress that she wore to the 2006 Oscars on the internet auction site eBay, raising £4,301 for Oxfam.

Judy Garland's clothes appear to be some of the most desirable for collectors; in 2005 the blue and white pinafore dress that she wore in the Wizard of Oz was sold for £140,000 at a Bonhams auction, while in 1999 another of her dresses from the film was sold for £199,500.
