Martin Freeman: I've turned down The Hobbit role
Reports had suggested that the actor would take on the role of Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings prequel.
But, speaking to Empire, Freeman said he had to reject the role because of fears that it might clash with the filming of the BBC's Sherlock, where he plays Doctor Watson.
Freeman said: "I did have to say no to it for the second series of Sherlock, but if something could be worked out, that would be great."
He added that he would be happy if the changing production date of the film meant that he could take on the role.
The Hobbit: Part One is expected to be released at the end of 2012. Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Sylvester McCoy are among the stars that are rumoured to be appearing in the film.
