Despicable Me claims UK box office top spot

Despicable Me has seen off competition from The Social Network and claimed the top spot at the UK box office.

The 3D animation, which features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews, netted £3.66 million.

In contrast, The Social Network, which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara and Joseph Mazzello, took in £2.48 million over the weekend and opened in second place.

Another new entry, Vampires Suck, debuted at three. Starring Jenn Proske, Matt Lanter and Chris Riggi, the spoof-film tells the story of a young teenager who is torn between two boys.

Last week's number one, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, fell three places to four, ahead of Life As We Know It.

The Town, which stars Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall and Jon Hamm, slipped from five to six, while Made In Dagenham remained at seven.

At eight was The Other Guys, followed by the Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud and Eat Pray Love.
