Cillian Murphy to star in Broken film
Mark O'Rowe has worked on the script, based on Daniel Clay's novel, which is described as a modern-day To Kill a Mockingbird.
However, rather than being set in the deep US, the film will be set in England.
Speaking to Screen Daily, BBC Films head Christine Langan said: "It's about distrust and hatred in a small community. It's very dark but with a note of redemption."
Nick Marston, Dixie Linder and Tally Garner are expected to produce the film.
Murphy was previously nominated for a best actor award for The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which netted the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival in 2006.
He has also starred in hits such as Inception, The Dark Knight and Intermission.
The 34-year-old recently worked on Hippie Hippie Shake with Chris O'Dowd, Hugh Bonneville and Sienna Miller and will next hit screens when he appears alongside Thandie Newton in Retreat.
