Oliver Stone: Charlie Sheen was prefect in Platoon
The film, which netted four Oscars, also starred Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. It told of a young recruit in Vietnam who is faced with a difficult moral decision when confronted with war.
Stone netted the best director Oscar accolade for the film, which also won the best picture, best sound and best film editing prizes at the Academy Awards.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Stone admitted that Sheen had changed quite a lot over the years, but argued that back in the 80s, he was the perfect choice.
"I think he did a great job. He was perfect for the movie. He conveys the horror of the place. I like his performance," he added.
However, the Alexander director added that he struggles to recognise the Sheen he knew when working on Wall Street and Platoon when he sees the man depicted by the media now.
