Wahlberg: The Departed could be a trilogy

Fans of recent gangster drama and Oscar nominee The Departed may be interested to hear that the film could spawn two sequels.

Mark Wahlberg told Empire that the screenwriter of the Scorses-directed hit is already working on a second instalment, which, if successful, may provide hope for a prequel.

"They told me they wanted to try to do it," he said, going on to hint that he may return in the role of Dignam.

Furthermore, Wahlberg suggested that a certain gangster-playing Scorsese regular could appear.

"They're talking about bringing in De Niro to play a senator or a congressman," he said.

The Departed has received a total of five Oscar nominations, including Martin Scorsese for best director.

In previous years, Scorsese has been short-listed for the coveted golden statuette eight times, for films such as Raging Bull and The Aviator, although he has failed to win one so far.
