Ghost Rider fails to overtake Hot Fuzz
The movie, which sees Nicolas Cage as a stunt biker who sells his soul to the devil, generated £1.85 million in its first week of release, followed by The Number 23, an occult thriller starring Jim Carrey.
Debuting at number five was The Illusionist, set in Vienna at the turn of the century. It features Edward Norton as a magician who sets out to ensnare his childhood sweetheart, played by Jessica Biel.
The lowest new entry in the top ten was teen comedy Material Girls, with real-life sisters Haylie and Hilary Duff in the lead roles - heiresses who are forced to survive when their fortune disappears overnight.
Meanwhile, next week's chart could see new entries in the form of Eddie Murphy comedy Norbit, David Lynch's three-hour epic Inland Empire and fictionalised biopic Becoming Jane.
