Heroes wins at TV awards

4 stars out of 5.0
A new science fiction series has won a top award at the US Television Critics Association and been named as the programme of the year.

Heroes, which tells the complex tale of normal people blessed with superhuman abilities, has already finished its first season in America and has been compared to Other cult shows such as Lost and Twin Peaks.

Other winners included recently departed mob saga The Sopranos, which took home the award for best drama series. It finished its successful run this year after six seasons.

The US version of cult mockumentary The Office was named as outstanding comedy programme, giving Steve Carell - who plays the equivalent of Ricky Gervais' character - another gong for his mantelpiece.

However, the UK also picked up a couple of awards; the BBC's Planet Earth documentary series was awarded the prize for news and information in addition to being chosen as the outstanding miniseries of the year.
