Waste Land (September 1)Anyone who still thinks modern art is a load of old rubbish needs to see Lucy Walker’s inspiring documentary about Vik Muniz, whose mosaic portraits of trash pickers and scavengers in Rio’s biggest landfill are fashioned out of scrap. All proceeds from his strangely beautiful work went back to the subjects. Watch Now
Kyle XY Series 1 (September 4)A young man found naked in the woods is a complete blank slate – no ID, no memory, no nothing (not even a bellybutton!). Adopted by a social worker’s family, Kyle (as they call him) proves to have no social skills but remarkable cognitive abilities. This 2006 sci-fi show is no Buffy, but it’s a quirky, very watchable family show. Watch Now
The Hangover (September 1)Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha enjoy the ultimate bachelor party – not that this night of legendary hedonism is revealed until the end credits! Todd Phillips’ very cleverly structured raunchy bro-medy boasts Mike Tyson, a baby, a chicken, a tiger and big, big laughs, not necessarily in that order. Watch Now
Sliding Doors (coming soon)What if…? What if the more English-than-the-English Gwyneth Paltrow hadn’t caught that train and found bf John Lynch shagging his ex? How different would her life be? At the very least she’d have a different hairdo, suggests this snappy philosophical romantic comedy, which follows both alternate realities to their conclusion. Watch Now
Horse Whisperer (September 1)Yup, that’s 13 year old Scarlett Johansson as the traumatized kid who is coaxed out of her isolation by gentle horse trainer Tom Booker (Robert Redford). An ode to the great American outdoors (and the great American outdoorsman) this Nicholas Evans adaptation makes a classy companion piece to the recent doc Buck. Watch Now
King Arthur (September 1)British mythology gets Bruckheimered in this distinctly action-oriented take on the Round Table vs the Roman Empire. Keira Knightley is an arrow-shooting Guinevere, Ioan Gruffudd narrates as Lancelot (even post-humously), while Clive Owen wields Excalibur. It’s an Iraq movie in woad. Watch Now
The Muppet Christmas Carol (September 1)Only 114 shopping days til Xmas (it’s always a shopping day, isn’t it?), but you know, there isn’t a bad time to watch this one. The success of The Muppet Movie can only rekindle interest in maybe Kermit’s finest celluloid outing – certainly the classiest. Michael Caine is Scrooge, and Paul Williams composed the songs. Watch Now
The Parent Trap (September 1)Double trouble with Lindsay Lohan as identical twins, separated at birth and reunited at summer camp – where they scheme to bring their parents (Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson) back together. This Disney remake is stellar family entertainment even if granny may prefer the Hayley Mills original. Amazing how promising LiLo looked back then. Watch Now
The Guardian (September 1)The US Coast Guard get the recruitment ad treatment usually reserved for the Marines, SWAT teams, or other red-blooded male pursuits. Ashton Kutcher is the gifted young swimmer with an attitude problem. Kevin Costner the battle-scarred mentor who whips him into shape. Action specialist Andrew Davis (Under Siege; The Fugitive) helms. Watch Now
Batman: Under the Red Hood (September 1)Yes, Virginia, there is another Batman – an unusually animated one, voiced by perennial character actor Bruce Greenwood. Also Neil Patrick Harris is Nightwing! As for the Red Hood, he’s voiced by US TV actor Jensen Ackles (Days of Our Lives; Smallville). It may not be The Dark Knight but it’s darn good. Watch Now
The Assault (September 6)A different kind of Christmas story, this adrenaline-charged thriller tells the true story of an Islamic terrorist attempt to fly a plane into the Eiffel Tower, December 25, 1994. A bit like United 93, it’s cut to the bone and builds to a gripping climax. French cinema didn’t used to be like this. Watch Now
God Bless America (September 9)Bobcat Goldthwait’s sawn-off satire about a mild-mannered middle-aged guy (played by Bill Murray’s brother Frank) who is driven to a homicidal spree by the noxious culture taken root in the US of A. It’s Natural Born Killers crossed with Network, and you’ll be forced to agree most of the victims deserve it. Especially the twerps who talk in the cinema. Watch Now
Salt (September 13)You will need more than a pinch of it to swallow the far-fetched convulsions in Angelina Jolie’s Bourne-style thriller, but the action is so intense and impactful, this Philip Noyce hit about a rogue sleeper agent makes Hanna look like child’s play. Angelina vs Saoirse, anyone? Watch Now
Seven (Coming Soon)The movie where Brad Pitt proved he was much more than just a pretty face. Thrillers don’t get much darker than David Fincher’s serial killer opus… Quite literally, you might want to watch it with a torch handy. It’s a brilliant, fiendish, unforgettable film. With Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman. Watch Now
The Karate Kid (September 15)“Jacket on. Jacket off.” Jackie Chan is ideal casting for the yoda-like martial arts mentor who teaches Jaden Smith how to pick up after himself in this surprisingly successful remake of the 80s hit. The violence is a bit OTT for 12 year olds but transplanting the story to China was a bold and effective move. Watch Now
388 Arletta Avenue (September 20)A Canadian cousin to Michael Haneke’s Cache (Hidden), this psychodrama stars Nick Stahl and Mia Kirschner as a young married couple who come to realize that someone is messing with them (their cat is one clue – he’s not quite himself). Director Randal Cole shoots the entire film through the disembodied eyes of the stalker’s hidden cameras. Watch Now
Grown Ups (September 29)An old college friend recently pointed out that he and I are now older than the middle aged ex hippies who gather for a college reunion in The Big Chill (a movie we watched back in the day). We’re also older than Adam Sandler, who heads up a gang of aging Saturday Night Live meatballs in this grosser, chillier reunion party. Wiser too. Watch Now
Melancholia (September 30)Kirsten Dunst gives a career best performance in Lars von Trier’s apocalyptic wedding movie. Not only does the bride succumb to depression, but planet Melancholia is on a collision course with the Earth! As the rock gets bigger and bigger, it’s hard to share Keifer Sutherland’s assurances that everything will be all right. Watch Now
Red State (September 30)Kevin Smith’s last film (allegedly) is a no-holds-barred horror satire about three teenagers who head off for what they think will be an orgiastic sexual encounter, only to find themselves held captive, at gunpoint, by an extreme fundamentalist church. Note: in the US, a red state is a Republican party stronghold. Watch NowTom Charity |
