300 up for 10 at Saturn Awards

3 stars out of 5.0
Epic swords-and-sandals adventure 300 leads the nominations for the 34th Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films' Saturn Awards.

The film, a tale of Spartan derring-do starring PS I Love You's Gerard Butler, scooped ten nominations, including Best Action/Adventure/Thriller and Best Actor for Butler.

In other nominations, Cloverfield will battle it out with Will Smith's I Am Legend, The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Danny Boyle's Sunshine, The Last Mimzy and Transformers for the Best Science Fiction gong.

Meanwhile, Ghost Rider, Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, 1408, The Mist, 30 Days of Night and Quentin Tarantino/Roberto Rodriguez double-bill Grindhouse will compete for the title of Best Horror Film.

Disney hit Enchanted, The Golden Compass, Stardust and Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix are among those nominated in the Best Fantasy Film category.

A seemingly now-obligatory Best Actor nomination goes to Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood. He is up against Butler, Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd), John Cusack (1408), Will Smith (I Am Legend) and Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises).

Enchanted's Amy Adams, Ashley Judd (Bug) and Helena Bonham-Carter (Sweeney Todd) are among the front-runners for Best Actress.

Past Saturn recipients include Gremlins, Jurassic Park, Batman Begins and Being John Malkovich.
