Fool's Gold star Matthew McConaughey has reportedly confirmed that he is in negotiations to take over at the lusciously-moustachioed helm of the big screen adaptation of 80s TV favourite Magnum, P.I.

According to Digital Spy, the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and We Are Marshall actor said he was "considering" taking on the role of the Hawaii-based private detective following rumours he had been approached.

The site says Rawson Marshall Thurber - the writer/director behind Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story - is believed to be on board for the movie, although McConaughey told the showbiz site that the new film would not be a comedy.

"As I understand it, it's [set in the] modern day. It's not a parody. It's not going back in time, it's a modern-day Magnum. I like that take," he reportedly said at the UK premiere of his latest big screen outing, Fool's Gold.

The original Magnum PI television series ran for 164 episodes between 1980 and 1988. It was co-created by Donald P Bellisario, who was also behind the hit series Airwolf and Quantum Leap.
