Denzel on fire in US chart

Denzel Washington's latest offering "Man on Fire" has topped the US box office charts, edging out fellow debutant "13 Going on 30".

In "Man on Fire" Washington portrays an alcoholic bodyguard who destroys large areas of Mexico City's underworld whilst avenging the kidnapping of a young girl. The film grossed $23 million (£13 million) - a million dollars more than the second placed film.

Jennifer Garner, star of "Alias" and "Daredevil" - who recently admitted fancying Rick Gervais, plays a teenager in an adult's body in "13 Going on 30". It is her first major lead role.

Last week's top film - Quentin Tarantino's much less gory follow-up "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" - dropped to the third slot netting $10.4 million.

However, April has been a record breaking month for the US box office - with two films opening above $20 million in the same week.

Filling out the top five were "The Punisher" - which dropped two places to fourth. Disney's barnyard animation "Home on the Range" held onto the fifth spot - making $3.5 million.

This week is also notable as it is the first time since its February release that Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" did not make it into the top ten. The film has gone on to become the seventh biggest film in US box office history - grossing more than $360 million domestically.
