Carrie and Co hit number one
The Sex and the City movie has gone straight to number one in the US box office after its first weekend on release, taking the biggest-ever opening for an R-rated comedy.
Sarah Jessica Parker stars as sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw in the spin-off from the HBO series, with Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall completing the fashion-obsessed quartet.
Some 85 per cent of Friday's audiences were female, with the film pulling in $55.7 million (£28.3 million) in its opening weekend on release, reports Variety
Dan Fellman, Warner Studios' president of domestic distribution, said the success of the movie revealed Darren Starr's creation was a "cultural phenomenon".
"What this shows is that given the right project, you can create a frenzy for the female audience, just like we are used to with boys and men," he told Variety.
"Now, I'm waiting for the sequel," he added. "And I think everyone else is too."
According to a recent survey by Moosehead Breweries, just four per cent of men planned to attend the movie's US premiere, with 36 per cent saying they will be drinking beer instead.
