Kung Fu Panda tops box office
The main characters in the film are voiced by Hollywood stars Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, which has raked in $60 million (£30.4 million) in its first weekend on release.
DreamWorks Animation's worldwide marketing chief Anne Globe told Variety: "It provides a great mix of action, comedy and lots of heart, which appeals to every member of a family."
"It's a great start for us," she added.
The films nudged Sex and the City from the top spot, which had previously replaced Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull as the moviegoer's most popular choice.
However, the intrepid archaeologist has proved more popular overall, falling just one place to third while Carrie and co have dropped to fourth position.
