Starsky and Hutch accelerate to pole

Seventies nostalgia-fest "Starsky and Hutch" has come in top of the UK box office chart.

The film relegated female power flick "Mona Lisa Smile" into second place.

"Starsky and Hutch" grossed £4.8 million, according to Screen International.

"Mona Lisa Smile", starring Julia Roberts and Kirsten Dunst, dropped down a place after taking £2.6 million.

Little impact was made by the week's only debutante "Open Range", which came in fifth. The Western, starring Kevin Costner, earned £424,000.

Dropping one place to third was hip-hop drama "Honey", while former chart topper "Along Came Polly", with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller, fell to fourth.

Mel Gibson's controversial "The Passion of the Christ" has snuck into the top ten, despite being on limited release. On Friday it goes on general release and is widely tipped to top the chart a week from now.
