Peter Berg to take on Hercules

Peter Berg is set to direct a new Hercules movie for Universal Studios, it has been confirmed.

The director, who has just helmed the Will Smith hit Hancock, will also produce the film entitled Hercules: The Thracian Wars, to be based on a five-issue comic series by Steve Moore.

Berg will be joined on the project by co-producers Jonathan Glickman, Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber, Sarah Aubrey and Barry Levine.

Speaking to Variety, Levine said: "What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who's more man than god, with conflicts and redemption."

The movie will tell the story of Hercules and a band of mercenaries attempting to reunite the rival tribes of Thrace into one united state.

Berg, who formerly starred in medical drama Chicago Hope, is also scheduled to direct a remake of the cult 1980s sci-fi film Dune for Paramount Pictures.
