Crowe to play Bill Hicks?
According to Empire Online, the Gladiator star is hoping to start work on the venture before commencing filming on Ridley Scott's Nottingham next year.
New Zealand writer Mark Staufer has already written a treatment for the proposed project and is now developing a draft script.
Hicks was one of the most acclaimed comedians to come out of the US and regularly caused controversy with his routines about politics, religion and drugs.
However, while he managed to beat his own drink and drug problems, he died of pancreatic cancer aged just 32 in 1994.
Elsewhere, it was recently reported that the Ridley Scott's Nottingham has been delayed due to the threat of an actor's strike and "location problems".
Reports have suggested this is due to the fact that the leaves in Sherwood Forest will be the wrong colour at this time of year.
