Sweeney adaptation halted
It follows the recent news that Guy Ritchie's new movie RocknRolla was under threat of being dropped due to similar concerns.
Studio Fox Searchlight told Variety yesterday that production on The Sweeney movie, which is due to be directed by Nick Love, has been halted.
Cockney hardman Ray Winstone was being lined-up ton play Jack Regan, while Michael Fassbender was tipped for Dennis Waterman's character George Carter.
The original TV characters were made famous by John Thaw and Dennis Waterman in the show's heyday.
However, Allon Reich, head of production for the firm behind the movie, DNA films, said he thought the movie would still see the light of day.
"We're confident we'll get the film made next year," he said.
The show's original creator Ian Kennedy Martin is thought to be involved with the project, with Love sharing some of the writing duties.
