Danny Boyle was named best for the movie, which also won adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing, music and sound awards.
Producer Christian Colson said: "The film you saw is the film Danny Boyle imagined and it's very rare you can say that. He dreamed the dream, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for two and a half years."
Kate Winslet was given the best actress award for her performance in The Reader, having also been nominated in the same category for Revolutionary Road.
Mickey Rourke held off competition from the likes of Brad Pitt to win the best actor award for his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.
"It's such a pleasure to be back here, out of the darkness," said Rourke.
As widely predicted, Heath Ledger was given a posthumous best supporting actor award for his role as The Joker in the Dark Knight.
