Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl review
25th June 2011
This is very, very silly - Monty Python's blending of so many cultures, traditions and in-jokes (from Bob the Builder to Kabuki) that horror is pushed onto a back-burner, I suspect that a young, Japanese viewer would find far more allusions to contemporary youth culture than I did, but I found plenty to keep myself amused. The sfx were often a self-parody, which I particularly liked, as also references to Japanese classic films and prints. Fortunately, however, this is fun even if you don't recognise any of these things, with the bonus of terrific colour, flashes of keen satire and carefully-chosen music. Worth a second look to pick up on what you missed the first time round.
