Pixars finest, period
Finding Nemo review
10th April 2012
Lets get this out the way. Finding Nemo is the best animated movie ever made PERIOD. Of the 500+ movies Ive seen only 2 would get a 5 star, and this is one of them.
There are a lot of personal reasons of course. It is the only movie in which I cried 3 times. It was a fantastic bonding experience between me and my father, (as anyone who has seen it will understand.)
But is it a good, well made, original movie? Absolutely!
The animation and score (by Thomas Newman) are incredible. Technology may have moved on but the art direction in Finding Nemo is the finest Ive ever seen. It also combines beautifully with the score, which is so beautiful it could reduce a heavyweight boxer to tears within seconds.
Then there is the fact more happens in 10 minutes than most movies manage in their whole length.
Oh and the most emotional scene Ive ever seen occurs between a paranoid clown fish and a reef fish with amnesia in the mouth of a whale. When you get that right somethings working out.
But the true brilliance of this movie is the characters. It never ceases to amaze me that my favourite character ever is a fish. A reef fish called Dory. She is stupid and innocent, but so lovable and loyal that you absolutely adore her. Then there is her ability to turn any phase into pure comedic or emotional gold, and the ability to brighten up Marvins day by just by being herself.
The final hammer-blow that presents this movie as one of the finest ever is the story. It is deliberately simple, but this just allows it to work as a fantastic backbone to the emotional roller coaster ride that results. To anyone that says this movie cannot be a masterpiece because its a cartoon, the only person you cheating is yourself.
